Kratom Pronunciation

“Kraaaytom” or “Krah-tom”: How To Pronounce Kratom

Despite all of the fame that kratom has been getting these days, people are still on a debate on how to pronounce kratom correctly. Based on various surveys and research, there are two ways on how to read the word “kratom”.  You can either use the short /a/ or the long /a/.

Kratom pronounced with a long /a/ is the most common way on how to read the word in the United States and Europe. The main reason behind this is that the linguistic feature of the words in these countries are fond of the long /a/ sound. Even in the English dictionary, when there is a letter A in between long letters, it would probably sound with a long /a/.

The English language doesn’t have the /ah/ sound embedded in their system. So English-speaking natives would stretch the sound of vowels, particularly the letter /a/.

Kratom pronounced with a short /a/ is common in Asian countries. Only a handful of people knew that the “kratom” word is read with a short /a/ sound. And most of these people come from where the plant originated, in Southeast Asia.

Thais and Malays are people who came from the native countries where kratom grew abundantly. And it is their pronunciation that we should follow when it comes to the nature of their product. Based on their linguistic background, most of their words are read with a short /a/ sound, especially those with the letter A stuck in between long letters.

Southeast Asian people differ in their pronunciation because of the /ah/ sound in their vocabularies. This /ah/ sound is not found in the English dictionary, which is why English-speaking nations are more into stretching the /a/ sound.

When pronouncing the word “kratom”, you have to consider the location of where you are from. In the end, it doesn’t really matter how you read or pronounce kratom. As long as you understand how it works and how it affects your body, you’re good to go.
